General Assembly

General Assembly

General Assembly

The General Assembly of the Central Student Council meets once each month when school is in session.  The Third Article of our Constitution specifies that the General Assembly will consist of each of the following groups:

  • Members of the Executive Board

  • Homeroom Representatives

  • Members-at-Large

Each of these groups and their role in the General Assembly are outlined below:

Members of the Executive Board.  There is a general election conducted each Spring, in which the 6th and 7th grades choose eight members of the Executive Board.  They are the four winners of the election for each office (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary) and the four second place finishers, who become the Board of Directors.  In the days that follow, the President decides on two additional Committee chair appointments, which must be approved by the Advisor. The Executive Board expands after the election to include all newly elected associate members as they prepare to take over when the gavel is passed at our Moving Up Ceremony in June.

Elected Homeroom Representatives. There are representative elections conducted each September, before the tenth day of school.  A procedure has been put in place for those representatives whose homeroom changes each quarter or semester, which is outlined in the Third Article of our Constitution to elect two representatives.  Each homeroom representative is expected to take an active role in the General Assembly and join at least one Student Council Committee.  If a homeroom representative is absent for four meetings of the General Assembly, the Ninth Section of the Third Article provides for his or her automatic removal from Student Council.

Volunteer Members-at-Large from all grades. Any student who fails to win a representative election, but still wishes to actively participate in the Central Student Council may apply to become a "Member-at-Large".  An interested student must complete an application, agreeing to attend all meetings of the General Assembly and serve on one Committee of the President's choice.  All applicants must also type a one-page essay that explains why they want to become involved in the Student Council, and what they have to offer it.  If more students apply than there are available positions, the Executive Board will anonymously judge these essays to make selection decisions.  The Third Article of our Constitution clearly explains the limitations and responsibilities of members-at-large in our Student Council.
